How to use this product:
The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) has outlined learning expectations and
focal points—key concepts and skills for emphasis at different grade levels. The activities in this
book align with the Measurement, Problem Solving, and Number and Operations standards for
grades 2 and 3 (nctm.org/standards).
Math Vocabulary Teaching Tip: Review math vocabulary for time-related terms, such as hour, half hour, minute, second, before/after, earlier/later, o’clock, am/pm, half past, a quarter to; day, week, month, year. Review money-related terms as well, including cent, penny, nickel, dime, quarter, dollar, cost, value, left, change, and estimate. The mathematical symbols used in writing about time and money—colons (:) to separate hours from minutes; and cents (¢), dollars ($), and decimal points (.) to separate dollars and cents—should also be discussed. Explain to students that amounts less than one dollar may be expressed in two different ways, for example, 27¢ and $.27. A review of these math terms will be especially helpful to English language learners.
