You might want to start your unit on Ancient Rome by reading a novel about Rome. Robert Graves wrote I, Claudius and Claudius the God about one of Rome’s more thoughtful emperors. These books can also be rented on tape. Colleen McCollough’s The First Man in Rome is an excellent introduction to the late Roman Republic. Another highly readable book is Marcus Aurelius.
