
Nanyehi was a Cherokee Indian woman who, after fighting in a war between the Cherokee and the Creeks with her slain husband"s gun, was given the name Beloved Woman. She was also given voting rights on the Cherokee Chief"s Council and made Governor of the Women"s Council. Nanyehi advocated trying to live peacefully with white settlers who were moving into Cherokee territory, but argued against giving up Cherokee homeland. After the American Revolution, she helped negotiate a peace treaty with the United States. She married Brian Ward, and white man, and was called Nancy Ward.
