Volumes in the Rookie Read-About Geography series spotlight each state in a small square book illustrated with color photos, a state map, and a map placing the state in the nation. Washington briefly discusses the state's forests and wildlife, geographic features, and the state fruit and flower. With two or three sentences of large-print, widely spaced type on a typical double-page spread, the book design will aid young readers in tackling words that are occasionally challenging. The simplified state map points out only two cities, Olympia as capital and Seattle, but it does include features such as Mount Rainier, the Grand Coulee Dam, and the Columbia River. Children will need to look elsewhere for information on the state's flag and bird, but the book's format and photos make this a practical starting place for primary-grade researches. Books on all 50 states are currently available.
