Watching movies based on books is always a great way to get your kids turned on to reading. The movie not only allows kids to see their imagination come to life, it provides parents with discussion points to get their kids critically thinking about the book versus the movie.
The first Goosebumps feature film is coming to theaters on Friday, October 16th, and it's not just based on a book -- it's based on LOTS of books! A hoard of monsters from the Goosebumps series are represented, from the Abominable Snowman of Pasadena, to the Lawn Gnomes, to the big baddie himself: Slappy. These characters literally come to life from the books: R.L. Stine, played by Jack Black, has written magical manuscripts that actually brought to life his creepy creations. To protect everyone from his imagination, he keeps the manuscripts locked up. But when curious teen Zach, played by Dylan Minnette, unlocks one, he ends up unleashing a slew of monsters on his town. He must work with his new friends, Champ and Hannah, as well as R.L. Stine himself, to round up the creatures and save the town.
If your kids have read the Goosebumps books, the movie gives them a chance to see the monsters in action -- and if they haven't read the books, the movie provides a great incentive! Scholastic published 5 movie tie-in books, including two movie novelizations at different reading levels, so kids of any age can get involved. Scholastic also rereleased the classic Goosebumps novels featuring the movie monsters, and new books are being released twice a year in the Goosebumps Most Wanted series. Once your child "gets goosebumps," you will have many more books to keep him or her hooked!
