Teacher Maria Escobar
My students at Raymond Elementary School Dual Language Academy are becoming biliterate citizens in their community. They are learning to read, write, listen, and speak successfully in both Spanish and English. These abilities are being nurtured and are growing throughout the rigorous educational experiences provided to them. However, it is essential to add various levels of Spanish books to the existing, limited sets in order to build individual reading skills in both languages in order to offer more choice in genre and topics to take control of their reading and writing lives. The gifts of funds provided by this grant will further enhance their biliteracy skills with the addition of books for their classroom library. The diverse classroom library of books will help empower language learners by building curiosity, vocabulary, and content knowledge in topics of interest to individual students. Providing more options for choice through structures for learning of best practices such as reading-writing workshops, shared reading, interactive and read-alouds will effectively engage students and instill a love and joy of reading. As biliterate skill increase, students will feel successful and become more confident.
