Read to Succeed Buffalo (RTSB) believes that through exposure to high quality, intentional, literacy instruction and literacy-rich environments from birth through 3rd grade, all children, regardless of economic or social challenges, can achieve success. RTSB’s CARE Child Care and CARE Preschool are early childhood, school readiness programs that provide low-income children access to high quality, licensed child care and early education at Say Yes Little Scholars sites. CARE supports quality improvement and literacy infusion for at least two years, allowing child care providers and teachers to maximize implementation of best practices. Among other strategies, these programs utilize dialogic reading, an interactive style of reading that promotes children’s language and literacy skills. CARE programs also utilize a locally adapted concepts of print assessment which measures students’ print awareness; the understanding of what books are used for and that print carries meaning. Funds would help RTSB get more high-quality books in the hands of our youngest learners. AARP Foundation Experience Corps is a volunteer-based tutoring program that connects older adults to their communities by engaging them in the intergenerational work of helping students in grades PreK-3 become better readers. In Experience Corps tutoring, students work with their tutor/mentor on fluency, the ability to read smoothly with accuracy and expression. To understand what they read, students must be able to read fluently. During the 1:1 tutoring session, tutor/mentors also model fluent reading of a fiction text to strengthen vocabulary and comprehension. Read to Succeed Buffalo will be expanding into new schools and a new school district Fall 2025. Donated funds would help fill the EC libraries at these new schools with high quality texts, featuring diverse characters and settings, so that students can view themselves in the books they read as well as get a glimpse into the lives and experiences of others. Thank you for supporting Read to Succeed Buffalo and our vision that all children will read at grade level by the end of 3rd grade, enabling them to read to learn for a lifetime.

Books are so important. They offer children a window into other worlds and their inner selves.
