My goal in creating this campaign is to provide my second grade students with books that are diverse in characters, authors, and illustrators. My school is a diverse, Title I school in Lee's Summit, Missouri. Half the students are people of color and our ESL program is ever-growing. The diverse books I am looking to add to our classroom library feature diverse characters and are authored and/or illustrated by a person of color and are culturally diverse and empowering. These books will allow my students of color to see and read about people who look just like them. Likewise, these books will also allow my students who are white to see and read about people of color in books. I am also hoping to add multi-lingual books to our classroom. My students love learning about other languages and I would love to provide them with books to foster those interests. I plan to partner with our ESL teacher and parents to do multi-lingual read alouds. My students of color deserve to see themselves in books and to see people of color who have authored and/or illustrated books. Thank you in advance for your help in helping my students!
