George R. R. Martin stated: “A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge.” As a 7th grade English Language Arts teacher at Ray Reynolds Middle School, in Pasco, WA, I have emphasized to my students daily the importance of reading and its benefits. This is the 4th year I have implemented a reading challenge that runs until June where I encourage students to read a minimal of 20, 100+ page books, in order to build vocabulary and comprehension knowledge. Many of my students have shied away from reading due in part to have fallen so far behind their grade level and I want to ensure them that despite their levels, there will always be books available to them that they can read and build upon as the year progresses. By contributing to my campaign, I will be able to purchase novels that my students find great interest in, make connections with and don’t want to put down-only seeking out their next adventure. Will you be the key in unlocking a passion for reading and sharpening the minds of our nation’s future? Thank you in advance for your consideration. Denise Hunter 7th Grade ELA Teacher
