My aim is to inspire my young students to read. I want them to discover the magic of print and to realize that reading is fun and that they can enjoy it anywhere, not just at school. And to do that I need to get books into my students homes. I teach TK in a low income neighborhood. Many of my families struggle to make ends meet. Books are expensive! When you live on a limited budget a book is not a priority. More than often, books are the last thing families of my students buy for their children. And yet ownership of books is so empowering to kids on their journey to becoming readers. In my teaching I use mentor texts (pieces of literature that a teacher and students use together for many different purposes, such as to develop/support comprehension and or writing. They can be books that allow us delve into themes that facilitate and support discussions on many topics such as social justice, kindness, positive self image, character or they may be text that mirror a reader, a readers cultural background, ethnicity, etc. They are texts to be studied and imitated). Beyond teaching with these texts, my goal is to purchase the books for every child to take home and enjoy/practice/connect with it over and over throughout the year.
