I currently have 21 students on my roster, and throughout the school year, I send home reading challenges during our four school breaks: fall, winter, spring, and summer. My reason for this campaign is to raise funds to send books home with my students to go along with these challenges to encourage a love of reading. Did you know that children who read daily are nearly THREE times more likely to enjoy independent reading compared to those who read weekly? Research also shows that only 22% of children ages 8–10 are read to or read at home. These statistics are just another reminder of how important it is to encourage reading both inside and outside of the classroom! My goal is to raise $20 per student, which would allow me to purchase $5 worth of books from Scholastic for each student during all four breaks. I know this is a big ask, but I truly believe that creating a reading culture both at school and at home can make such a difference. By providing students with books they are genuinely interested in, I hope to help them build confidence, develop consistent reading habits, and discover that reading can be something they enjoy rather than something they have to do!
