Louis Braille wanted to read. He could not accept the fact that as a blind boy, in the year 1821, he was unable to communicate by the written word. His friends told him he was wasting his time, but Braille’s experiment with tiny dots on paper became a system that, as the plaque on the front of Braille’s house reads, "opened the doors of knowledge to all those who cannot see."
