Starting with a single square, children divide the square into halves to make two rectangles, then put them back together again. Children then divide the square into fourths to make smaller squares, rearrange them to make various shapes, and discover how the new shapes look when rotated, flipped, or turned. The lesson continues to explore other shapes, such as triangles and rectangles.
This PowerPoint lesson is a multi-click animation sequence that introduces standards-based math skills and concepts. Also includes three practice pages at levels A (below grade level), B (at grade level), and C (above grade level), which may be distributed according to students' abilities.
