These Kids' Books Were Voted the Best of 2019

Dec 16, 2019

This year was an incredible one for new books, with children’s literature breaking many traditional molds and introducing lovable new characters (and bringing old favorites back). A number of remarkable Scholastic titles have been named among the best kids' books of 2019 by Kirkus, TIME, Washington Post, The New York Times, NPR, TODAY.com, and the Chicago Public Library

For instance, there’s the stunning tale River, a picture book about a traveler who takes a breathtaking adventure down the Hudson river. “At the conclusion of this beautiful book, when the water-weary traveler ends her journey in the arms of her loved ones, ready to turn her sketches and words into paintings and a story, readers will feel they have traveled a journey themselves,” according to a Kirkus review

There’s also Guts, the famously appealing graphic novel that touches on childhood anxiety and tummy woes. “I would have benefited greatly from a book like Raina Telgemeier’s standout graphic novel Guts, which takes on childhood anxiety in a beautiful, well-told and gorgeously illustrated memoir,” writes NPR senior editor Barrie Hardymon in a review
