During the American Civil War, Clara Barton served as a nurse on the front lines where she was dubbed the "Angel of the Battlefield." Her firsthand experience supporting those in crisis led to her founding of the American Red Cross on May 21, 1881.

I asked my students to write what they look forward to now that they are back at school. One student’s response struck me the most . . .'to have a book to read.' I spearheaded a Scholastic campaign, and the community also donated their own gently used books or bought new books for our students in need. It made me realize the power of a community and the necessity of giving books to all children.
