On May 5, 1961, astronaut Alan Shepard made history by becoming the first American, and second person, to launch into space with a 15-minute suborbital flight in the Freedom 7 capsule. It was a pivotal moment in the intense competition between the Soviet Union and America in their quest for space exploration, which became known as the space race.
