Massachusetts, a land of firsts, is an important backdrop in teaching the beginning of America’s history. It helps to answer the questions as to why the Pilgrims arrived in Plymouth and from what they were fleeing. This leads to learning about the first meeting with the Wampanoag, the peace treaty negotiated with Massasoit, and how a gathering of thanks for plentiful crops and good health came to fruition. Exploring this first colony also helps to explain the role the Puritans played after their arrival, establishing the first public school and library, as well as some of the strife that led to the first war with the Indians.
