On January 11, 1935, Amelia Earhart became the first person to fly solo across the Pacific Ocean, taking off from Honolulu, Hawaii and landing in Oakland, California. Although Earhart's legacy ended in a mysterious tragedy, celebrating her ambitious spirit also serves to recognize the bravery required to step outside of societal norms of gender or race in order to follow through with a calling.

It seems fitting that January not only encourages us to recognize Earhart, but also Rosa Parks Day on January 1, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day on the 20th. In essence, this month provides many opportunities to discuss with students the role that bravery plays in achieving a goal.

Personal pursuits can often widen to a greater good. When Rosa Parks refused to sit on the back of the bus, it spurred a citywide bus boycott led by the one and only Martin Luther King Jr. and established Parks as the mother of the civil rights movement. Leading with courage not only inspires others to do the same but also has the potential to inspire far-reaching change above and beyond anyone’s imagination.
