These two chronologically arranged volumes in the Extraordinary People series cover "extraordinary achievers." The 80 profiles in the Hispanic Americans volume treat individuals from Juan Ponce de Leon to Oscar de la Hoya, along with a few groups (the conquistadors, the braceros) and events (the Pueblo revolt, the Spanish-American War). In the civil rights volume, biographical entries on 53 individuals such as Fannie Lou Hamer and Robert Moses are joined by topical entries highlighting a few groups and key events from the 1960s. Entries in both volumes are three or four pages long and include at least one black-and-white illustration. The civil rights volume provides paragraph-length entries on an additional 27 people. Each volume also contains a glossary and a list of resources "To Find Out More."
