    3/1/05 Science Books & Films
Each book in this colorfully designed series teaches the same concept: "Elements are the building blocks of matter. Matter is the stuff or material that makes up everything in the universe." Author Salvatore Tocci also compares the elements to letters of the alphabet: The elements combine to form millions of different chemical "words."

Besides introducing basic chemistry concepts in a straightforward manner, Tocci provides interesting details about the elements. He explains each element's role in everyday life. For example, the book about calcium describes the element's importance to bone strength. To emphasize its point, the text suggests that readers soak chicken leg bones, one in water and one in vinegar. Calcium is removed from the vinegar-soaked bone, which then is more easily broken. Tocci also tells how the elements were discovered and presents a list of "fun facts."

Each book includes instructions for two or three simple chemistry demonstrations using common household items. Some of these demonstrations require adult supervision. Children will also enjoy the vivid pictures, many of which show people in real-life situations.

The last few pages of each book contain a glossary, an index, and a personal introduction to the author. The appendix lists additional references, both online and at the library, where curious students can find more experiments and information. It seems that no detail has been left out in this thoughtful series of books for beginning science classes.
