Independent Reading Assessment: Fiction is a one-of-a kind formative assessment system that gives teachers in grade 4 a needed tool for measuring comprehension—one that goes deeper than running records and standardized reading tests. Using high-interest trade books, a response form, and a rubric, teachers can evaluate what students actually understand about a book from cover to cover, identify the comprehension skills they need to move forward, and then plan targeted follow-up instruction.
