Graphic Organizers for Curriculum Planning Before beginning a new unit or course of study, record children’s prior knowledge with the use of graphic organizers. This can be done on an individual basis or as a whole group. For instance, if you wanted to introduce a unit on Living Organisms, you might display the Matrix organizer on your interactive whiteboard to elicit your students’ knowledge of the classification of living things. By asking questions and recording student ideas, you can determine where gaps of understanding or misconceptions exist. You can then tailor your instruction and provide more learning experiences as needed.
