Based on Dr. Alfred W. Tatum's innovative research, ID voice: vision: identity is a high school literacy program that targets all students — especially those who may have simply stopped reading, stopped writing, and tragically stopped engaging with text. ID enables educators to re–engage these students in the literary community.

More than ever, all students need transformational texts that engage their hearts and inspire a sense of hope and possibility. However, this is especially true for those students who are negotiating the margins in their schools and communities.

ID voice: vision: identity:
• Provides students with literary resources to counter some of the larger out–of–school forces.
• Helps build students textual lineages — and ability to believe in themselves as smart, creative, capable human beings.
• Helps students define who they are and connect them to goals larger than themselves.
• Provides students with a road map to life, develops an individual “plan of action” and moves them toward a “healthier psyche.”
• Inspires students to explore their world and write, getting their “voices on record.”

At the core of
ID voice: vision: identity are four social justice platforms. These platforms actively engage teens, nurture their identities, and enable them to build rich textual lineages by making the literacy experience relevant to their lives. The goal? To help all teens discover their identities and mark their place in the world with their own voices and visions:

define self
finding the text and language that helps you put your voice on record without waiting for others to define your generation

become resilient
remaining steadfast in the face of destabilizing conditions inside and outside of school

engage others
bringing others into the fold to strive for a better humanity for all

build capacity
creating a foundation for future generations; agenda building

“Because young people are unique and face their own challenges, they must identify texts that mark their time and their lives. If we create opportunities for this to happen in schools…they will not only begin to trust the texts, they will begin to trust us, too. Then maybe we'll hear them say, ‘Education is on my side.’ This is my hope.”
–Alfred W. Tatum
